Have you ever had songs grab you, become part of your consciousness on a soul level?

I don’t mean the love songs or “my baby done done me wrong” songs. Instead, think of the songs with lyrics you might not know, but that grab you nonetheless. Or, ones you do know that make you pause and reflect every time. For me nearly anything by Alicia Keys, Carol King, India.Arie, or Corrine Bailey Rae works. I won’t be able to pick only one of any of these artists, so I won’t try, so I’ll highlight some others.  Note that the links on the song titles lead to music videos. If you click, adjust your volume as needed. 

There’s even lyrics in an Eminem song that makes me pause. I like a miniscule amount of rap music, but the hook/chorus in this song connected on a soul level:

It has a driving beat that compels. Most of the rest of the song I can live without, but this segment reaches out every time I hear it. Rapper Tupac Shakur had a few songs with soul-stirring, thought provoking lyrics too.  Check out:  Keep Your Head up. Imagine a gangsta rapper creating such a poignant reminder to girls and young women, with an admonition for his “hommies.”

And I always want to take a twirl, and wish the same for those I love, when I hear this one:

When is the last time any of us danced? This song reminds us to BE.

Another song I’ve loved since childhood without knowing why; one that I picked as my signature song is all about manifesting—and I quote, “It is real if it’s only in your mind”:
